In my work with clients, I take into account the myriad influences that make us who we are - our biology, psychology, social environment, current situation and history. Together we talk about the different influences, study them, try to understand them and work towards changing the things the client would like to change. The purpose of the collaboration between the client and therapist is to assist the client in achieving his or her goals. My task is to listen and respond in a way that is unique to the client. I am flexible and eclectic in my work with clients.

What is psychotherapy and how it works?

In treatment, the client is encouraged to say everything and to talk as openly as possible. Saying everything in this nonjudgmental, accepting environment opens the door to change. We discover new things about ourselves. We have new thoughts, which leads to an ability to take new actions. This allows us to be released from repetitive, compulsive and destructive behaviors, relationships and patterns. We are then able to create productive, creative ways of being in the world.

Working with Addictive Behaviors

Psychotherapy is helpful to those in 12 step programs who contend with life challenges in abstinence. For those who do not attend these programs, ‘harm reduction’ is an incremental approach to a healthier lifestyle at a pace that is acceptable and manageable.  The focus is on reducing the harm the addictive behavior inflicts on  a person’s relationships, health, work, life goals and general functioning.  Addictive problems are not only to substances and may focus on food, sex, work, games and gambling.
